English Tests

IELTS

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world’s most widely used proficiency exam for individuals seeking to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country.

IELTS results are globally recognised as the preeminent English language test.

The minimum IELTS score required for an Australian student visa is:

  • An overall band score of 5.5; or
  • An overall band score of 5 if packaged with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS; or
  • An overall band score of 4.5 if packaged with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS.

However, it is important to note that the minimum IELTS score required may be higher for certain courses, such as those in the fields of Medicine and Law. It is recommended to research and understand the specific requirements for the course and institution you are interested in.

University Education English Language Requirements (IELTS)

For admission into Bachelor’s degree programs in Australia, the minimum IELTS band requirement is 6.0 for each band, but for educational institutions such as the University of Melbourne, the minimum IETLS band requirement is 6.5 for each band.

Further, if the chosen field of study is Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Law, Medicine, Oral Medicine or Veterinary Science, most universities will require a minimum of 7.0 for each band in IELTS.

For admission into Master’s degree programs in Australia, the minimum IELTS band requirement is 6.5 for each band. However, if the chosen field of study is Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Law, Medicine, or Veterinary Science, most universities will require a minimum of 7.0 for each band in IELTS.

PTE

To qualify for a student visa in Australia, a minimum PTE Academic score of 42 is required. However, if an individual completes at least 10 weeks of English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), a minimum score of 36 is accepted. Similarly, if an individual completes at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, a minimum score of 30 is accepted.

Exemptions from the English Language Requirements for Student Visa Applicants

Students who hold a valid passport issued by the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland, are exempt from providing evidence of English language proficiency when applying for an Australian student visa.

This exemption applies regardless of whether they fall under streamlined or regular evidentiary requirements, and they cannot be required to take an English language test.,
